Decanter World Wine Awards 2019: Awards and Recognitions

The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) held its sixteenth edition and renews its commitment to quality and excellence. It is one of the most important and rigorous competitions in the wine world. Renowned international judges gather there to evaluate wines from all corners of the world. The evaluation follows a strict protocol that ensures impartiality.

Once again, France obtained the highest number of wines recognized as Best in Show, the highest category of the competition. Behind the thirteen French Best in Show wines was Spain, with eight, followed by Australia and Portugal with six.

Of the 16,500 wines that participated, only 50 were awarded Best in Show, equivalent to 0.3%. There were 148 Platinum and 480 Gold medals. This edition of DWWA also showed an increase in the percentage of award-winning wines: it went from 66% in 2018 to 74% in 2019.

Rutini Wines’ Single Vineyard Gualtallary Cabernet Franc 2016 , recently highlighted by Tim Rutini Wines, recently highlighted by Tim Atkin in his 2019 report, won a gold medal in this competition (96 points).

Argentina was the South American country that stood out the most for its growth compared to 2018: this year there were 12% more wines awarded. Georgia, Greece and China were among the countries that surprised with important awards. The United Kingdom, the motherland of the DWWA, obtained three Best in Show this year, strengthening its growth.
