History of Malbec and its Argentinean imprint

The history of Malbec began when this grape did not even have that name and survived the phylloxera plague that hit Europe in the 19th century.
Then, a Hungarian pilgrim named Monsieur Malbeck was the first who managed to plant this vine separately in large plots and eventually took it upon himself to spread it throughout France, starting with Cahors and then Bordeaux.

Over the centuries, this varietal found its place in the world: Argentina.
Being the grape variety with the most hectares planted in the country and the one that represents us, it is not strange that it deserves its own day.
Therefore, since 2011, Malbec World Day has been celebrated every April 17.

Why this date?

According to historical data, Malbec arrived in Argentina in 1853 thanks to a French agronomist named Michel Aimé Pouget.
At the request of then President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Pouget directed a training center for agronomists, winemakers and viticulturists called Quinta Agronómica de Mendoza.
Its formal presentation to the Provincial Legislature was, precisely, on April 17, 1853.

What does Malbec mean to our winemaking team?

Mariano Di Paola – Director of Oenology

“Thinking about what Malbec means to us reminds me of celebration, happiness and pride that this is our representative grape variety all over the world. The enjoyment of knowing that when we work with it every day, we discover new paths that open up to continue surprising us. I like what it gives us, what it can give us and what we can potentially discover in the future.”

Gonzalo Fernandez Gregorat – 1st winemaker

“Working with Malbec is a constant challenge for me personally, as there is so much supply and quantity of wines on the market, it forces us to constantly search for innovation and improvement in the quality of each year”.

Mariano Di Paola (son) – sparkling wine expert

“We made a 100% Malbec sparkling wine, which at the beginning was a huge challenge because we were advised by experts from Champagne (France) who took a long time to understand this varietal with unique characteristics that are only found in our country”.

Vivien Morvan – French winemaker and rosé expert

“With each rosé we make from this grape we discover a distinctive product with a unique profile above the rest, especially those coming from other parts of the world since we have an advantage that others do not have: the Malbec. Having this exclusive vine from Argentina makes the final product irreplaceable.”

Ana Laura Fernandez – yeast bio reactor expert

“The first experiences in which we worked with the yeast bio reactor were to inoculate Malbec from our estate in Guatallary (Tupungato). We chose this varietal because of its nobility and the confidence it gives us to work with it.”

Charly Enfarrell – barrel expert

“Well-used oak, in just the right measure with balanced potential is the ideal tool to further enhance any Malbec. Our experiences show that we can offer a huge range of options to further diversify the styles of each finished wine.”
